We are offering webinars for Nex Level Hockey
players and parents!
For Players
Is the mental side of your game keeping up with your physical skills? When you get to our level of play, everyone is physically talented; it’s your mental skills that are going to allow you to excel. Join Jeff Levin, who has worked with hundreds of teams and thousands of athletes, for three unique 60-minute sessions that will up your game and allow you to enjoy your birthright of confidence, calm, and connection. Jeff’s work goes beyond sports psychology. He’ll cover:
Webinar #1: Name the problem
- Jeff will talk about the causes of player anxiety – what he calls “Outcome Fever” and all the baggage that comes with it.
- How connecting with teammates is critical for maximizing individual performance.
- Turning failure into fuel for success.
Webinar #2: Elephants, Gremlins, and the PPP
- Elephants, the undiscussed cultural factors (the “Overwhelming Tragedy List”) that create stress and anxiety, which impair play.
- Gremlins*, the negative self-talk many people use to shame themselves about their failures, small and large. We’ll create and normalize an understanding of what “Outcome Fever” is. We all have Outcome Fever, and we’ll learn how to defeat all that worry! Here’s how:
- Players will be introduced to the Mental/Emotional Personalized Performance Plan, which maximizes their self-knowledge so they can make better choices when they are upset, anxious, or depressed on or off the ice in order to manage their feelings and behavior so they can remain focused and play better.
* From Rick Carson’s book, Taming Your Gremlin—highly recommended.
Webinar #3: Tweak the Plan to Move Forward
- By this third week, players now clearly see how emotional issues and trauma cause them to “grip the stick too tight” and are armed with tools to correct the situation. Also covered:
- Taking control of their own destinies—locus of control—gives you choices and opportunities!
- The Personalized Performance Plan should include goals that focus inward (individual goals that relate to individual performance) and outward (individual goals that relate to the team). The third session will firm up each plan so each player can move forward.
- Players who attend all three sessions get a discounted 30-minute session with Jeff to work more on their plans.
Dates: Tuesdays, November 15, 22, 29, at 7:00 PM
Cost: $15/session
Email Jeff to register. Class limit is 25; if class fills, a second session will be offered.
For Parents
Supporting Parents, Supporting Kids – The 6 I’s
As is common knowledge now, many student-athletes struggle to stay in the moment and enjoy ready confidence on and off the ice. Many parents—and even many kids themselves—know they have a problem, however, almost everyone is at a loss as to why this has happened or how to fix it. Join Jeff Levin, who has worked with hundreds of teams and thousands of athletes, for three unique 60-minute sessions that will teach parents how to support their children’s work on the mental side of competition.
The causes are cultural and, as a result, many kids today have missed the psychological “lessons” we learned by osmosis—lessons that are crucial to normal child development and to full confidence on and off the ice. We can learn to reinstall focus, vulnerability, grit/mental toughness, the abilities to be present and shed failure, sacrifice, empathy, and a growing belief in the power of the experience. These skills can be summarized as the 6 I’s:
- Imagination
- Intestinal Fortitude
- Integrity
- Intimacy
- Independence
Which together allow young people to form
- Identity.
In each webinar, we will explore a different I and provide techniques that allow parents to support players’ work on these emotional muscles in order to find out who they are—not through their accomplishments, but through their steadily increasing character.
Webinar #1: Acknowledgment
We’ll dig into Elephants, the undiscussed cultural factors (the “Overwhelming Tragedy List”) that create stress and anxiety, and Gremlins*, the negative self-talk many kids (and adults) use to shame themselves about their failures, small and large. We’ll create and normalize an understanding of what “Outcome Fever” is and explain The New Parenting Playbook and how it runs counter to raising confident boys. Parents will leave this webinar with tools to use to have an Elephant conversation with their kids and techniques to improve their children’s—and their own—internal dialog and stop living on the edge relative to their son’s normal daily ups and downs. Included in the discussion are some healthy habits parents need to teach their children about physically taking care of themselves, such as sleep and diet, which can help or hurt mood. 6 Is addressed: Imagination/Intestinal Fortitude
* From Rick Carson’s book, Taming Your Gremlin—highly recommended.
Webinar #2: Awareness
As parents learn to disconnect from their son’s normal, everyday struggles, thus modeling composure, we teach people how to help their boys become both self-aware (emotional thermometer) and aware of others’ journeys (empathy)—how to truly connect with other people. Included in this discussion are the negative consequences of excessive screen time and some suggestions for appropriate device use. We also cover the different ways to focus—multitasking, deep focus, and mindless tasks—and how all three are important to brain development and functioning. 6 Is addressed: Integrity/Intimacy/Intestinal Fortitude
Webinar #3: Action
One way to feel less anxious about something is to act! In this webinar, we talk about internal vs. external locus of control: parents must learn what they can and can’t change and how accepting this helps. We discuss the well-known Serenity Prayer: where to act, where to let our sons figure it out. Parents learn to manage their own emotions in an effort to nurture their son’s confidence. Additionally, nothing takes a young athlete out of his own head more than helping others. Discussion will include how to support the boys to have healthy, independent peer-to-peer relationships, as well as teaching them the emotional benefits of altruism, on the ice and off. Included in this discussion is the importance of being vulnerable in improving confidence and connection and relieving stress. Read more about Outcome Fever and vulnerability here. 6 Is addressed: Intimacy/Intestinal Fortitude
